Teeth Cleaning

Good oral health and preventative dental care start with an appointment with one of our highly trained, friendly, and experienced dental hygienists. We’ll perform a teeth cleaning and other preventive services that will keep you smiling for years to come.

Why is teeth cleaning important?

Not only will careful monitoring of your oral health, coupled with regular cleaning, reduce your risk of disease, but it also helps you avoid cavities and fillings, gingivitis (gum disease), periodontitis (chronic inflammation of the gums), and will help with bad breath (halitosis).

It’s also a proven fact that regular monitoring of your oral hygiene is important to your overall health and well-being. According to the Mayo Clinic, “Signs and symptoms of some systemic diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and diabetes, might show up in the mouth first.”

What happens during my teeth cleaning appointment?

We keep track of your on-going oral health by reviewing your charts and discussing your medical history during every visit, making updates as needed, and recommending any adjustments to your treatment plan.

Then, our hygienist will perform the cleaning and the dentist will examine your teeth for evidence of tooth decay, cavities, and gum disease. The exam includes taking a look at your face and neck, which can often signal issues that lie under the surface.

The key elements of your regular exam and cleaning include:

  • Periodontal exam to check for indications of redness, inflammation, or other signs of disease that may require specialized treatment.
  • Restoration exam to see if any adjustments are needed for your dental appliances and previous dental work, or to see if a replacement is needed.
  • Intra-oral tour to gain a holistic, 360-degree overview of your mouth, including photos.
  • Digital X-rays that look for hidden issues will be ordered if needed.
  • Orthodontic evaluation to check if your bite or bone structure needs correction.

The most important part of your regular visit remains the thorough dental cleaning that our hygienists provide. The cleaning ensures that all plaque, stains, and tartar buildup are removed. If you choose to do so, a professional tooth whitener or fluoride can be applied. Our hygienist will review any lifestyle factors that influence your oral health, like diet, smoking, and at-home care.
