Central Virginia Endodontic Surgery

Save natural teeth and relieve deep-rooted pain

Endodontic treatment for complex dental problems

When a tooth’s root becomes infected or inflamed — often from trauma, cracks, or deep decay — surgery may be needed to preserve the tooth and avoid extraction. At Commonwealth Dentistry, we offer expert endodontic surgery, including apicoectomy procedures, to help patients find relief and protect their long-term oral health.

Endodontic surgery involves accessing the root tip of the affected tooth, removing infected tissue, and sealing the area to prevent reinfection. This precise procedure can often save teeth that haven’t responded to traditional root canal therapy, and it’s performed right here in Central Virginia with comfort, safety, and precision in mind.

Don’t wait to treat chronic tooth infection

When infection persists after a root canal — or occurs near the tip of a tooth’s root — the symptoms can be subtle but serious. Left untreated, the problem may lead to swelling, discomfort, or even tooth loss. Endodontic surgery helps preserve the tooth’s structure and eliminate the infection before it spreads.

What to expect from endodontic surgery

  • We begin with a thorough exam, digital imaging, and diagnostic tests to determine if surgery is the right solution.
  • During the procedure, we access the tip of the root through the gum and remove infected or damaged tissue.
  • The root tip may be shaved or removed entirely, and the area is cleaned and sealed to promote healing.
  • Sutures are placed, and detailed post-op instructions are provided for a smooth recovery.
  • Follow-up appointments help us track your healing and ensure long-term success.

Endodontic Surgery FAQs

What is an apicoectomy?

K
L

An apicoectomy is a type of endodontic surgery where the tip of a tooth’s root is removed, along with any infected tissue. It’s often recommended when a root canal alone hasn’t fully resolved the problem.

Does the procedure hurt?

K
L

Most patients experience little discomfort thanks to local anesthesia and sedation options. You may feel mild soreness after surgery, but it typically resolves within a few days.

How do I know if I need endodontic surgery?

K
L

If you’ve had a root canal and still experience symptoms — such as swelling, pain, or sinus issues near the tooth — surgery may be the best next step. We'll perform diagnostic imaging to determine if it’s appropriate.

What are the risks of delaying treatment?

K
L

Infection can worsen over time, damaging bone and potentially leading to tooth loss. Prompt treatment gives you the best chance of preserving the tooth and avoiding more complex procedures later.

How long is the recovery?

K
L

Most patients return to normal activities within 24–48 hours. We’ll provide clear aftercare instructions and stay in touch to monitor your progress.
