Virginia Pulpotomy Treatment
Save young teeth and stop pain early
A gentle solution for deep decay in baby teeth
When decay reaches the nerve of a baby tooth, a pulpotomy may be the most effective way to relieve discomfort and preserve the tooth until it’s ready to fall out naturally. At Commonwealth Dentistry, we offer expert pulpotomy treatment for children in a calm, supportive environment.
A pulpotomy — often called a “baby root canal” — involves removing the infected portion of the tooth’s pulp, disinfecting the area, and sealing it to prevent further damage. This quick and comfortable procedure helps save the tooth, maintain alignment in the developing smile, and prevent unnecessary extractions.
Advanced pediatric care
We use child-friendly techniques and gentle materials to keep kids comfortable and cooperative during treatment.
Focused on comfort
Your child’s peace of mind matters. We offer sedation options and soothing care to make the visit easy for everyone.

We work with most insurance plans and provide flexible payment solutions to make treatment stress-free for parents.
Experienced with little smiles
Our team has specialized training in pediatric restorative dentistry and knows how to make each visit positive.
Treating infection early keeps your child smiling
If left untreated, infected baby teeth can cause pain, spread bacteria, or even affect the development of permanent teeth. A pulpotomy helps stop the problem early, preserves the tooth, and helps your child eat, speak, and smile with ease.
What to expect during a pulpotomy.
- We examine the affected tooth with imaging to confirm if the pulp is inflamed or infected.
- Once confirmed, we remove only the damaged pulp from the crown portion of the tooth.
- The inner chamber is disinfected and sealed with a therapeutic material.
- A crown is typically placed over the tooth to restore strength and prevent future issues.
- We’ll walk you through aftercare and help you monitor healing at home.

Why pulpotomies are beneficial for baby teeth
Preserves natural tooth structure, maintaining healthy development
Prevents infections from spreading to surrounding areas
Reduces discomfort and avoids the need for early extractions
Supports proper speech, chewing, and spacing for adult teeth
Pulpotomy FAQs
What is a pulpotomy exactly?
A pulpotomy treats infection in the pulp of a baby tooth by removing the affected tissue and sealing the area, allowing the tooth to remain in place until it naturally falls out.
Will my child be in pain after the procedure?
Most kids experience little to no discomfort following a pulpotomy. Mild soreness is common but easily managed with over-the-counter medication.
Is this the same as a root canal?
Not quite. Pulpotomy treatment only removes the damaged pulp from the top of the tooth, whereas a root canal removes all pulp from the entire tooth. It’s less invasive and designed specifically for baby teeth.
Why not just pull the baby tooth?
Keeping baby teeth in place helps guide the proper alignment of permanent teeth. Early removal can cause spacing problems and impact future development.
What should my child eat after a pulpotomy?
Soft foods are best for the first day or two — think applesauce, pasta, and smoothies. Avoid sticky or crunchy items until the tooth feels fully comfortable again.
