Preventive Dentistry

The best way to avoid major problems and save thousands of dollars on dental care is to make sure problems don’t start in the first place! By taking care of your teeth with a great daily routine and regular visits to your dentist, you will keep your mouth healthy and decrease the chances you’ll need extensive, expensive dental care.

Your child will need preventive dental care at each and every stage of their growth. This is because each stage will require unique needs in preventive care.

  • Babies can be scheduled for an appointment when they turn one year old or when the first tooth erupts. Baby teeth are placeholders for adult teeth, and they’ll be checked as soon as they are visible. Just like adult teeth, baby teeth are vulnerable to tooth decay.
  • The toddler age is the optimal time to learn good dental habits they’ll need to know for the rest of their life. This is also when they become comfortable going to the dentist – so you can begin scheduling regular appointments for them at this stage.
  • Children from ages 6-12 begin losing baby teeth and gaining adult teeth. With regular check-ups, Dr. Miller will evaluate their occlusion and refer to orthodontists when needed.
  • For teenagers, proper and safe oral health can depend on hormonal changes, sports, and activities. We recommend teens, and adults, have teeth cleanings and exams every six months or more frequently if they are deemed high caries risk or in orthodontics. Teenagers should also see specialists regularly if they have braces or retainers.

Proactive dental health is our overarching goal, and we provide patients with the necessary education and care to make sure you get on and stay on the path to success.

Why is preventive dentistry important?

It has been proven time and again that if you brush and floss daily and see your dentist regularly you will have a significantly reduced risk of oral disease. It’s just a simple fact that a good preventive oral care routine, which includes awareness and knowledge, is the best defense against future disease.

A regular program of care helps fight all of the bad words in dentistry, including gum disease, cavities, root canals, enamel and tooth loss, periodontal disease, and so on. Visiting your dental office and dental hygienist regularly is the most important proactive step you can take. Experts recommend a visit with a professional dentist every six months, more often if you have ongoing or previous issues. We’ll help get you on the best schedule to achieve and maintain your goals.
